Lord’s Resurrection declares the Victory of the Cross
(2 Kings 4:26-37, I Cor 15:46-58, John 20: 1-8)

Paul said, “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the scriptures.”( I Cor 15:13). This is the Gospel,  the living word, that  we have to proclaim. Those who believe this Gospel inherit eternal life and those who don’t believe this, eternal death. Those who believe that God has raised Jesus from the dead will be saved .When we say, “the Just shall live by faith, it means that those who believe that Christ died for their sins and rose again on the third day to justify them are born again to live for ever by God’s great mercy. Christ’s Resurrection is central to Christian faith because Christ’s resurrection

  1. Proves that God is faithful and trust worthy .Jesus said before He died that He would rise again on the third day and as He said he rose again and kept His word.
  2. Christ’s Resurrection, reveals that He is the Lord of life and the universe.
  3. Death is not the end of life. Death will not touch those who are in Christ Jesus. This is our living hope. It means we hope that one day we all rise again to be with the Lord for ever.
  4. The power that God exerted in Christ when he raised Christ from death is available to every one.
  5. Lord’s Resurrection is the basis of the witness of the Church to the world .Jesus is Christ; the Son of God .This is the living witness of the Church.

In the Bible we find many people who were dead came to life just as the widow’s son in today’s Old Testament lesson but they all died again.  Only Christ rose from the dead on the third day never to die again. He destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel. The Gospel lesson shows how faith in the Lord’s Resurrection dawns in people. By this faith we can face any trials that come in our lives and live victoriously .This is today’s Epistle lesson.

Old Testament lesson:2 Kings 4:26-37
Jesus is the Resurrection and Life

If her only son dies can any mother bear it? But the widow in the Old Testament lesson didn’t sit crying but ran to Elisha with hope and Elisha brought back her son to life. In the same way Mary and Martha told Jesus that Lazarus should not have died if Jesus was them. Jesus comforted them by rising Lazarus and taught them that he was the Resurrection and life and those who believe in him shall never die. How ever this faith won’t come in some people immediately. Even though Jesus told his followers that he would rise on the third day we find them in today’s Gospel lesson seeking him in the tomb on the first Easter Sunday.

Gospel Lesson: John 20:1-8
Jesus must rise from the dead!

Early in the morning on the day Jesus raised from the dead some women who went searching to the place where Jesus’ body was kept, they found the stone rolled away. Remember the stone was not rolled that Jesus may come out. He can come out any way. It was not rolled that Jesus may come out. It was rolled for the sake of people who could go and see that the tomb was empty. Before people could believe in the resurrection of Jesus like Mary and other disciples they go through four stages.

  1. They thought that the story of resurrection was cooked up and so it can not be true.
  2. To some like Peter even after verifying the facts, they could not understand the facts till he met the risen savior.
  3. The third stage is, like Thomas they can’t believe until they meet the resurrected Lord.
  4. The last stage is they completely understand when they begin to serve the resurrected Lord, like Paul which is today’s Epistle lesson.

Epistle lesson: I Cor 15:46-58:
Death is swallowed in the victory of Jesus

Paul did not meet Jesus face to face like the early apostles .But the risen Lord confronted Paul on the road to Damascus. Latter Paul called this as the vision from the heaven. From that day onwards, Paul served all the days of his life like a bond slave. In the 15th chapter of the first letter to Corinthians, he is teaching the Corinthians how the faith in the resurrection of the lord is central to our faith. He told them if Christ was not raised their faith would be futile and because Christ was raised every body would be resurrected with glorified bodies. He taught that death was swallowed permanently. Those who are in Christ will not be conquered by death. This eternal life is the gift we all have through Jesus Christ.

Because Jesus rose again whatever we do for Christ would never
be a waste. Jesus’ tremendous victory over death should transform our life. Let us not be discouraged when we feel our efforts are not giving results, but press on in our ministry trusting that ultimate victory is ours. We should lead all our people to Christ when they are still living so that every body will part take in the resurrection of the living.

Celebrating Ester is to be saved by believing that Christ rose from the dead and become one with Christ in the experience of baptism and go into the world as witnesses of His resurrection by the power of His resurrection. Come and see go and tell is what Jesus tells us every Easter morning. So let us go into the world and proclaim that God has raised Jesus from the dead and we are the witnesses of this. May the spirit of God empower us to be His witnesses! Happy Easter!
